The horses raced, laughter filled the air and champagne was had, but where was the fashion?
Horse racing events are known for fashion moments but this one really disappointed. The fashion was mediocre at best. We expect to see new and innovative at this type of event but it seems that both of those stayed home this time around.
The first mistake was the lack of a theme. Although the event had strict dressing instructions, it really did not say anything – it was neither here nor there. Essentially, all that was clear was the colour palette and even that was not interpreted. We saw the same ol’ shades of blue that we get introduced to in Arts and Culture.
The real shocker of the two-day event was the winners of the best-dressed prizes. When thinking of the winners we imagine the Beckham’s at the royal wedding; instead, we got Monét X Change in her Sunday best.
The men’s category can be best described as bland and pedestrian. We’ve seen all those looks before and we really did not need to see it again. The women’s category was equally as bad. It was five-to-bridesmaid and far from memorable. The old cliché, “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” definitely held true.
There were a few looks that impressed but they were few and far between. The rules had to be bent in order for these looks to be executed. These looks did well because they were daring and added some edge to such a clean cut dress code and muted colour palette. We saw shapes and fits that were given a slight update, prints that are usually a big no-no for this type of event that actually worked, and styling meant for something sexier sneaked in and holding its own.
L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate was very one-note. It can be considered cute but it is 2019 and we deserve drop dead gorgeous. Overall, it was deprived of forward-thinking and fashion risks. Guess the position of fashion remains vacant until next year.
